Wolf Pack

Anybody who lives in the south (east, southeast, midwest, northeast) knows not to travel on back roads after dark, especially in the summertime.  Why not? Deer!  Hitting a deer at highway speed can total your vehicle and cause the occupants serious harm, too.

A scientific study of the roads in Wisconsin has a solution:  wolves! The researchers discovered that there were far fewer deer-related highway incidents in rural areas that had re-introduced the wild wolf population.  The wolves, apparently, take to patrolling the roads and open areas adjacent (very few wolves are ever involved in traffic incidents), either scaring the deer away or facing them the consequences.

There are virtually no other means of keeping deers from the roads and byways.  Sure, you can build multi-million dollar deer bridges over the highway, but when it’s dark outside the deer can’t read the “deer crossing” signs to use the overpass.

Wolves are a great solution for the city slickers who are stupid enough to drive backroads at night.  However, not so much with the local residents, who lose livestock and pets to said wolves.  (I live in a very rural area with lots of coyotes ~ Bevo the cat comes inside every night, never fail.)
