My Story

When I started work for a major architectural/engineering consulting firm in Austin, Texas, I was a draftsman. We worked with lead on mylar sheets – drafting by hand!  (I enjoy tech drawing to this day.)  I learned HVAC design by doing (I have a BSME in mechanical engineering, heat transfer).  I also did drafting for the electrical engineer, and when I got my P.E. license a few years later, I was qualified to seal HVAC as well as electrical drawings.

When I left the business years later to go to grad school to study celestial mechanics, my objective was to write a book that I could use to get current on electrical design if I ever had to return to the consulting biz. 

About the Book

This book came out one year after Retrofitting for Energy Conservation, also from McGraw-Hill.  I was still in the energy conservation mode, so basically, this is a sequel.  The emphasis is to design the most efficient electrical systems for buildings of any size.  Many times in the book, I tell electrical designers not to let HVAC (or any other discipline) hoodwink them into supplying more power than they need to install an efficient air conditioning or other system.
