Large spaces with individual workstations separated by partitions are common in laboratories and business offices. When a single person works late, the entire space must be lighted. An energy-efficient alternative is to switch the lights so that one level provides general area lighting; then other switches at each relevant work area activate overhead lighting (or workplace task lighting) specific to that area.
