There are several routine tasks that should be done to keep the refrigerant circuit of the cooling equipment in optimum condition. The system will not only perform most efficiently, but the longevity of the compressor and its auxiliary components will be extended. Also, refrigerant leaks will be minimized, which translates into less money for replacement Freon and less damage to the ozone layer (as the case may be). A listing of essential inspection criteria follows.
If the system has a moisture-liquid indicator, inspect it often. The color of the refrigerant indicates if there is moisture in the system. This is a serious problem that, if not remedied by a qualified mechanic, can result in severe damage to the system. Bubbles in the sight glass indicate the system may be low in refrigerant. Again, a certified mechanic needs to charge the system and inspect for the source of the leak(s).
1. A portable leak detector can aid in investigating potential breaks in the system: around the compressor seals, at the sight glass, valve bonnets, flanges, and around all pipe joints and connections and valves.
2. Keeping the mechanical room clean helps in noticing oil spots on connections or pooling on the floor under the equipment. These give a clear indication of leaks in the system that need prompt remedial attention.
3. The refrigerant circuit filter can get clogged. This is evidenced when the liquid line leaving the filter is colder than the line entering it. If the blockage is severe, then sweat or frost may occur at the strainer outlet.
4. Be attuned to the pitch and sound of the system under normal operating conditions. Unusual sounds can indicate problems.
5. Belts must be tensioned and aligned correctly. Motor bearings and other moving parts need sufficient lubrication for best functioning.
6. Properly installed and calibrated gauges to measure temperature and pressure help to diagnose some problems. For example, if the condenser is dirty, the system pressure will increase, and the system will begin to operate less efficiently.
