A variable-volume system provides air at a constant temperature to each space served. Terminal units in each zone adjust the volume of air delivered to each zone, depending on the load requirement of that area. There are several ways to improve the efficiency of this type of system:
1. Reduce the volume of air delivered by the system to the minimum necessary.
2. Lower the hot water temperature and raise the chilled-water temperature in direct proportion to the space requirements.
3. Install static pressure controls to more effectively regulate the air- handler bypass or inlet dampers.
4. Replace the volume-control dampers with a variable-frequency drive motor modulated by a signal from a static-pressure sensor.
